Part of the death spiral of the Des Moines Register and journalism in general. Scares me. This should frighten anyone who thinks seriously about democracy.

Ah, yes, The dearth of critical thinking! Your column rings true, and your paragraph stacking is excellent. Thank you.

The Des Moines Register is primarily filled with 'feel good' stories reminiscent of an old weekly, 'Grit', that my Oklahoma Grandparents subscribed to. 'My Weekly Reader' of the 50's had more actual news. The Register does have a few actual reporters doing their job, such as Lee Rood, Watchdog. To be fair, my parents and as I aged out of home, I subscribed to the Des Moines Tribune, because it had nes of that day until the Noon hour, whereas the Register catered to the '9 to 5' crowd and wasn't delivered until most of us were gone to work. It was a sad day when we were informed of it's demise, a mistake, in my view.

I agree with you. I quit reading the DM Register years ago. NYT digital edition is the daily paper I read. May it long survive. My Local news comes from local TV stations. They are very deficient in national and international news. I depend on MSNBC and CNN for that.
